When you think of fresh, what comes to mind? One would think that fresh is something new or clean. Moreover, the dictionary notes fresh as "clean, pure, and recently made". Well in most cases the food society consumes is not fresh, but filled with germs. In this world of chemical filled-foods, there are still farmers who want to make a difference to create fresh produce of food; that is why Ana Joanes directed the documentary "Fresh".

Will Allen

Fresh is a documentary about various farmers wanting to spread their knowledge and create a fresh produce market. The director Ana Joanes targets other farmers to join the fresh food train. Furthermore, Farmers in the film farmers told stories that caused them to have epiphanies about what they truly do to their crops or animals. For example, pig farmer, Russ Kremer always gave his pigs a vaccine to eliminate diseases, however, he was severely gashed by his pig's tusk leading him to be infected and almost lose his life. Russ immediately terminated his pig production and started a new fresh anti vaccinated production. Thus, every time Russ vaccinated his pigs the germ that was being warded off grew stronger. Joanes utilizes Russes story for other farmers to realize their chemicals are developing a monster in the food industry; if their product is contaminated then the consumer is contaminated.

Other farmers, such as Will Allen created movements like Growing Power to inform new, old, or non-farmers of the importance to have a naturally grown farm. Will Allen walks his crowd through ways to keep his crops clean with the power of worms. In addition, to spread the movement, he provides the audience with worms if they need them to start their fresh crops. This movement is valuable not only to farmers but to buyers because buyers can assist fresh farmers by buying their products. Farmers like Allen and Kremer want the public to realize that fast production is not the freshest production, but it is the reenactment of nature. For instance, some farmers are demanded to have a fast production, for they feed their cows dead cows; that is how mad cow disease happens. Instead, fresh farmers keep their cow herds moving and grazing with chickens to clean up the insects that are leftover on the grazed part of the field.

After watching "Fresh", I am now compelled to look out for freshly made products not only to support fresh farmers but to look out for my health. I knew before that most food products are covered with chemicals, however, I did not know there was a movement to have fresh foods take over the chemical foods. It is imperative for people to understand that fresh food is on the market for consumers to have a healthier option of food. In addition, it is essential for more farmers to join the other fresh farmers in making a cleaner food-eating nation.                        Cows Grazing
