Entry #2. Why Can't We All Be Friends?

                              Reflections from The Movie Roots

Have you seen or heard of the series/ book Roots? Moreover, Roots is a true story about the author Alex Hailey's decent Kunta Kinte. Kunta Kinte was a free man in Africa until one day he was taken by a group of voyagers. He was placed on a slave ship with 140 slaves out of the 140, 98 slaves make it on land. Even though he was forced to forget about his roots, Kunta Kinte would never forget his African past because from seven generations he will be remembered. Just like Kunta Kinte passed his history down from generation to generation it is essential to know our own family history because that is where we gain our pride and we will not be ignorant about how we entered into this melting pot we call the United States.

As I was watching this historical drama, I was pondering about how racism developed. Racism in the United States has been a complication before the start of the thirteen original colonies and now racism has manifested into a massive ball and chain for society. You would think out of all these years racism would dissipate, but NO! This country is allocated between those who want to evolve as a better society and those who have chosen to regress. I do not know about you but I am tired of racism, so let us stop this mess by showing kindness to each other! Racism is another word for hatred. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was a great inspiration to treat others with respect and dignity. The wise preacher, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. notes, "Hate is too great a burden to bear... Nonviolence is absolute commitment to the way of love. Love is not emotional bash; it is not empty sentimentalism". Thus, hate is useless and drags, but love overpowers and will always display accomplishment.

To recapitulate, Roots is a 5-star series in my book because if one really takes in the history of slavery it will create a reflection on how anguishing society was back in the slave times but it will also form care to treat others with respect. We often get entwined with our own personal struggles that we forget to remember the struggles of our ancestors who struggled for us to live the life we live.

Here is a message society needs to take in about living in harmony:
